Prepare to be a-maze-d at the South Yorkshire Wood Fair

Endcliffe Park, Saturday October 6th, 11am – 7pm

On Saturday October 6th, Endcliffe Park will be transformed into an amazing world of wood when the South Yorkshire Wood Fair returns to Sheffield.

The free family event showcases all things wood - from traditional crafts to chainsaw artists and even big woodland machinery not normally seen in a city park! As well as displays, demonstrations and the nail-biting speed chainsaw competition, there will be workshops and activities for all ages throughout the day, including the opportunity to help artists create a willow labyrinth in preparation for a magical, wood fuelled spectacle at dusk…

The labyrinth and its central tower have been designed by Sheffield based duo Graeme Richie and Scot Fletcher (aka Handspring Design) but the structure won’t be a permanent feature in the park – it is destined to burn at the end of the Wood Fair as part of a fire performance that will also feature renegade fire dance troop Mr Fox and film made by Yorkshire based theatre group, Exponential, with GCSE drama students from Abbeydale Grange School.

The pyrotechnic obsessed pair also created the spectacular 30 foot Green Man that blazed over Hunters Bar at last year’s event. Scot commented: “We’re really thrilled to be part of the Wood Fair finale again this year - most of our work involves building permanent wooden structures and sculptures so the opportunity to make something transient and play with pyrotechnics is a real treat. The show is inspired by the transition of summer into autumn and winter – the beginning of the annual cycle of life, death and regeneration we see so vividly in Sheffield’s beautiful woods and trees. ”

Wood Fair is at Endcliffe Park from 11am – 7pm on Saturday October 6th. The event is organised by the South Yorkshire Forest Partnership and Sheffield City Council to promote the use of sustainable, local resources and green spaces.
